NATIONAL NEWS – Popular Afrikaans singer Theuns Jordaan has passed away.

The South African music industry is reeling after news broke of the death of Afrikaans singer-songwriter Thons Jordan on Wednesday.

The exact cause of Jordan’s death is not yet known, but the singer-songwriter was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2020.

Jordan told Netwerk24 in December of last year that his prognosis was very good and he was already in remission.

According to the publication, Jordan had a bone marrow transplant in March of this year.

Popular in Afrikaans music circles, Jordaan was loved by audiences across South Africa for his famous songs including Soos Bloed, Jou Skaduwee and Vreemde Stad.

“One of his lesser-known songs, Jasmyn, Katryn, is one of my all-time favourite songs, although he never performed this song on stage.
“I recall asking him about the reason why he never performs this song live on one cold night in 2017 after one of his concerts (he still signed CD covers at the time). With a small smile, he just shook his head and said it’s too sad,” said The Citizen’s lifestyle editor, Xanet Scheepers.

Jordaan was one of the most successful South African artists, selling over a million records. He also received several awards during his career, including the 2013 South African Music Award for the country’s best-selling artist, for his album Roeper.

Fans, friends and colleagues took to social media on Wednesday to share their condolences and their favourite Theuns Jordaan songs.

Controversial singer Steve Hofmeyr didn’t want to believe the sad news, taking to Twitter to say he will wait for confirmation.

Hofmeyr’s son, Armand Hofmeyr, who is also a musician, took to Facebook to share his condolences, expressing how much he had learned from Jordaan.

“Rest in peace. See you one day soon,” he said.
