The Tanganyika Cabinet, led by President of the Republic of Tanganyika and Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, endorsed the TANU Youth Coalition Resolution on April 19, 1963, and unanimously resolved to form JKT on July 10, 1963. First, 11 youths from 11 different districts were trained in Mgulani camp in Dar es Salaam.
The earliest of these young men were youth union secretaries dispatched by TANU to Yugoslavia in 1962 to get youth leadership training. Ms. Z. Kiango, Mr. S. Chale, Bw. P. Lwegarulira, Bw. R. Kamba, Bw. H. Ngalason, Mr. J. Ndimugwango, Ms. Mhando (Senior Guide), Bw. D. S. Msilu (Master), Mr ES Mwakyambiki are some of these young pioneers.
Objectives of the JKT Trainging
- To serve the nation as a disciplined military force ready for national emergencies and international obligations.
- To develop the physical and mental fitness of the individual.
- To serve as a pool of capable military personnel from which the government can call upon when needed.
- To instill a sense of nation-unity and self-esteem in the participants.
- To channel the energies of the young men into useful fields.
- To establish a social network among the participants.
- To provide sufficient exposure to the military field so that the participants can gain a better understanding of the military system.
