Chato District has one Council namely Chato District Council which was officially established in July, 2007. Chato District is located in North West Tanzania between Latitude 20 15′ to 30 15′ South of the Equator and Longitude 310 to 32o East of Greenwich.
The district is bordered by Muleba District to the North, Bukombe District to the South, Biharamulo District to the West and Geita District to the East. The district has an area of 3,572 square kilometers and is at an altitude between 1,135 and 1,410 meters above sea level.
According to the population and housing census of 2012, the District had a population of 365,127 of which 181,368 are men and 183,759 are women. The number of households is 60,855 equal to an average of 6 people per household. The district has 175,261 working people equal to 48 percent of the total population. As of December 31, 2017, the District is estimated to have a population of about 420,191, 208,720 males and 211,471 females.
